Kyle Winklaar

-
Bridging Caribbean heritage and contemporary jazz through research, rhythm, and innovation.

CULTURAL INNOVATION
-

Transforming Caribbean tradition into a
global sound
.

Kyle Winklaar (Aruba, 1993) is a pianist, composer, and interdisciplinary artist whose work bridges Caribbean musical traditions with contemporary jazz and global influences. Rooted in the rhythms of Aruba – wals, tumba, mazurka, tambú – his music transforms heritage into innovation. Through improvisation, extended harmony, and polyrhythmic structures, he creates a sound that is both deeply personal and internationally resonant. Kyle has performed at festivals such as Caribbean Sea Jazz Festival and INJAZZ Rotterdam, and collaborated with artists including Giovanca Ostiana, Izaline Calister, Randal Corsen, and Vernon Chatlein.

In 2026, he made a pivotal decision to step away from his role as assistant director at Scol di Musica Rufo Wever to fully pursue his artistic vision. This transition marked the beginning of a new phase: one centered on research, composition, and global collaboration.

His recent projects form a coherent artistic ecosystem: • Balor explores cultural exchange between Aruba and the Netherlands through piano dialogue and composition • Tecla i Tambú investigates the relationship between melody and traditional percussion • Hicaru expands this work into a research-driven ensemble project, combining Aruban rhythms, highlife contrapuntal structures, and European jazz harmony Together, these projects redefine Caribbean music not as static tradition, but as a dynamic and evolving language.

Beyond performance, Kyle is deeply engaged in education and community-building, developing workshops and methodologies that empower young musicians to explore creativity without limitation. His work stands at the intersection of art, research, and cultural identity – with a clear mission: to build bridges between cultures and to bring Caribbean music into new global contexts with depth, innovation, and authenticity.

A new language
of Caribbean jazz.

ARTISTIC NARRATIVE
-

How the music evolves.

“My work begins with a question: What does it mean to carry a culture through sound? Growing up in Aruba, I was surrounded by rhythms – wals, tumba, mazurka, tambú. At first, I learned them as tradition. Then I started to question them.”

Balor – The Beginning of Dialogue
Exploring cultural exchange through piano and interaction.

Tecla i Tambú – Returning to the Roots
A dialogue between melody and traditional rhythm.

Hicaru – Expanding the Language
From intuition to research: • New time signatures • Highlife-Caribbean interaction • Jazz harmonic expansion

The Vision?

Caribbean music as a living, innovative force on the global stage.
