BALOR (2024)
A musical dialogue redefining cultural exchange through piano and identity.
Kyle Winklaar’s project Balor is a piano-centered exploration of cultural exchange between Aruba and the Netherlands. At its core, the project investigates how two musical identities can coexist, interact, and transform through dialogue.
Working in an intimate duo setting, Balor removes traditional rhythmic frameworks such as drums, allowing space, timing, and interaction to become the driving forces of the music. Through improvisation, harmonic exploration, and rhythmic reinterpretation, the piano becomes both a melodic and percussive instrument—capable of carrying entire musical landscapes.
The project features collaboration with pianist Randal Corsen, whose artistic voice plays a central role in shaping the sound of the album. Together, they create a refined and expressive sonic experience rooted in Caribbean identity while expanding into a global jazz language.
Balor represents a defining step in Kyle’s artistic development—moving from interpretation to authorship, and from tradition to transformation.
Purpose
The project was initiated to explore cultural exchange as a lived musical experience—where Aruban musical heritage interacts with European jazz aesthetics in a space of equality, depth, and artistic freedom.
